Group Activity Worksheets

This page provides everything you need to participate in the two-part group exercise, "Unexpected!" and "Surprised!"— key components of our Caring Conversations program.

These activities are designed to deepen participants’ understanding of how intention and impact can differ, especially in sensitive conversations. Group members are invited to share real-life experiences and engage in meaningful discussions to gain insights about how to navigate these moments with empathy, awareness and grace.

Below, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for both parts of the activity. You can also download a PDF version of the instructions to guide you during your session.

Part 1: Unexpected!

Participants will explore how their actions, while well-intentioned, can lead to unexpected outcomes or misunderstandings.

Think about a time when you said or did something with good intentions but were surprised by the other person’s reaction.  Share the situation with the group. (Be brief 😊 to ensure everyone has a chance to share.)

Discussion Questions to Consider:

  • What surprised you most about their reaction?

  • How did their reaction make you feel?

  • How did your reaction influence how handled it?

  • How much did your good intentions matter?

  • How could you have handled the situation differently?

  • Could you (should you?) have anticipated their response?

  • What might you do differently next time?

Part 2: Surprised!

Participants are encouraged to reflect on how they react when they are on the receiving end of actions that have an impact different from the intention behind them.

Think about a time when you were surprised by something someone said or did.
Share the situation with the group. (Be brief 😊 to ensure everyone has a chance to share.)

Discussion Questions to Consider:

  • What were their intentions?

  • How much did their good intentions matter?

  • How did they react to your response?

  • How did their reaction make you feel?

  • What led to or contributed to the misunderstanding?

  • How did your reaction influence their behavior?

  • How could you have responded differently?
